Why work?

Why do you do what you do?
What Values drive you?
Here’s why I work with creative people and businesses:
I believe the spark of divinity exists in each and every human being and that spark of light is kindled and built into a roaring, life-sustaining flame when people create. Creativity is the hand of God actively working in this continuing experiment that is our world.
By helping creative people and businesses reach their goals I’m doing nothing less than helping people reach their potential and unleash the power of their individual divinity.
What I do differently from many lawyers is COLLABORATE with my clients. I don’t know everything. Each client’s situation is different and requires a different combination of my skills. I like to enable my client’s vision.
Creative people need a sense of ownership in each project, a sense of spirit and empowerment that comes through collaboration rather than the paternalist attitude embodied in many lawyers today. My goal is to allow my clients to actually enjoy working with their lawyer and truly consider me a trusted advisor and member of their leadership team.
Since you asked, and since I’m regrouping at the moment and could use a reminder, here’s the answers I wrote down several years ago:
My Mission Statement:
I will…
Do great things.
Change systems, institutions, and societies.
Change people’s lives.
Open people’s hearts and minds.
I will help people:
1. connect with others,
2. work through life’s challenges,
3. realize their own value and worth.
I want to do work that:
1. challenges me to explore and learn new things,
2. changes the world in a socially redeeming way,
3. has balanced expectations and desires re: my time & energy,
4. covers my bottom line and allows me to give back.
I will live my values by:
Empathy – looking through other people’s lenses.
Respect – treating people the way they want to be treated.
Honesty – telling the truth.
Openness – sharing with others.
Love – showing affection.
Authenticity – acting like myself.
I think I’ve grown quite a bit since I wrote this and could, now, probably come up with answers that are more meaningful, profound, and inspiring, but it’s a start, anyway.
Wow! That’s great Kari. Here I am thinking I’m figuring stuff out, and then you come along and say “welcome to the club slacker!” – kidding. You are living those values and it shows.
You’ve had more than your share of challenges in the last year, and those experiences can only help you be more empathetic to the challenges faced by others. And, motherhood has to be the most “sharing” relationship any human can have. You’ll be great!
Love,
Kevin
